- Everton Fans - Show Your Loyalty!
[Recreation-and-Sports:Soccer] As an Everton FC fan I sometimes have to balance pride in my club with the realities of a game like soccer, where each week brings different news. Recently we have had plenty to cheer about, but it isn't always like that. And the mark of a true fan is the willingness to stand up and be counted when things are going badly, as well as the other times. So I was delighted to find a place where I could 'mark my mark' as a loyal fan.
- Sunday Night Syndrome
[Health-and-Fitness:Mental-Health] John came to see me because he had a "nameless dread" – a constant, nagging sense of anxiety. "It's worst on Sunday evening”, he said. "It's there all through the weekend, but Sunday is when I feel it most. It's really killing my family time. I'm short-tempered, ratty, just not nice to be with. My wife complains that I hide away for hours at a time, but she doesn't really understand."
- Accept the Price; Choose the Method of Payment
[Self-Improvement:Attraction] What is your personal philosophy? How do you choose to live your life? Indeed, do you choose it at all? Or do things just “happen” to you?
There is a persistent myth in Western society - that go-getters go and get, and anybody who doesn’t is a sheep. We punish ourselves daily for our inability to shape our worlds. In truth, no creature shapes their environment as much as a human, and just look at what we’ve done with it – a polluted world, with hundreds species dying out before our eyes.
I believe that we need to take a different view; we need to learn to accept external forces, instead of seeing them as an enemy.
- Dragon Slayers
[Arts-and-Entertainment:Movies-TV] The BBC show "Dragons' Den" offers a tantalising glimpse into the nature of true confidence.
- Public Speaking Confidence
[Writing-and-Speaking:Public-Speaking] We all experience ‘butterflies’ before a public speaking engagement. It’s natural. But how do you deal with far more severe signs of anxiety? Many people are terrified of public speaking – not just anxious, but scared to the point of nausea.
- Dealing with Abuse
[Self-Improvement] We've all been abused, in one form or another. Of course, the word conjures up images of sexual and physical abuse – frighteningly common in our society. But there are other forms of abuse – ranging from overt bullying through to less obvious "slights" against the individual. These all carry a price of some sort, and if we allow it, these historical acts of abuse will also affect our future lives.
- Confidence
[Self-Improvement:Positive-Attitude] As a hypnotherapist I specialise in helping people to develop confidence and self esteem.
But what is confidence? How do you achieve high levels of this seemingly inbuilt quality?
- Confidence : The Forgotten Parenting Skill
[Home-and-Family:Parenting] Let’s be honest, none of us was prepared for parenthood. Parenting is by far the most complex and demanding job you’ll ever take on, without advanced qualifications. So it’s not surprising that so many of us feel under-confident in the role.
When I first became a father, a friend once asked me what I most wanted for my new baby. Without thinking, I blurted out “confidence”. It surprised me that this was the first gift I thought of, but now I’m not at all surprised. Because with confidence, not only is so much possible, but we have the capacity to enjoy life.
- What is the True Nature of Internet Marketing?
[Internet-and-Businesses-Online:Internet-Marketing] 12 months ago I took my confidence coaching business – Confidence Club – online, to help a broader distribution of people and to spread the message that ordinary people can achieve enhanced self confidence – and deserve to do so.
So this has been a learning experience for me – an opportunity to find out just how effective Web marketing is, what works and what does not work. I’ve been a little shocked to see so many hucksters operating in this space, and saddened to realise that some of them may be successful.
What follow are some of my observations. Feel free to disagree, or to challenge these. As time passes, they will inevitably lose currency anyway – that’s just the nature of the beast.
- When Confidence Falters: Picking Up The Pieces
[Self-Improvement:Positive-Attitude] We all need self belief. Every day, we face challenges – in our personal lives, professionally, and also ‘random’ challenges from left field. Walking down the street takes confidence. A person with low self esteem finds every aspect of life difficult. We all need a minimum level of self confidence simply to get on with the unpredictable business of living. Some of us need far more than this.
- Can Stage Presence be Learned?
[Business:Presentation] What is stage presence? Can it be learned?
There are, undoubtedly, some ‘naturals’ in this field. The fine Welsh actor Richard Burton, for example, on his debut performance at 16, playing an extra scrubbing steps, was said to distract the audience from the Shakespearean play! Many actors commented on Burton’s extraordinary stage presence, in particular his stillness – the audience were drawn to him even when he was apparently doing nothing.
Hypnotherapist Jim Sullivan discusses the fine art of projecting one's personality . . .
- Interview Preparation
[Business:Careers-Employment] Interviews generate immense levels of anxiety. Anxiety impairs performance, so that interview candidates often leave the room knowing that they didn’t give their best. Probably 98% of us have had the experience of ‘going blank’ in a pressure situation, losing the thread of our argument, or simply not ‘getting’ what the other person is asking. There are proven techniques for dealing with these pressures, as hypnotherapist and confidence coach Jim Sullivan explains . . .

- Blushing
[Self-Improvement:Attraction] Blushing can be a curse. Blushers experience a range of effects, including loss of confidence and fear of meeting new people. Blushing is an interesting phenomenon, as there is no generally accepted psychological theory to explain it (although many theories have been put forward). Nevertheless, some of the characteristics of blushing have been clarified.

- Hidden Self Confidence
[Self-Improvement:Leadership] Peer independence is the ability to ‘stick to your guns’ in the face of opposition or dissent from your peers. Some individuals have exceptionally high levels of peer independence, for which we should all be thankful. Peer independent people are the heroes in our society, the ones with moral courage who will stand up for truth and justice, regardless of fashion. Peer independence is a special, and relatively rare, aspect of self confidence.
