Qigong is a traditional practice that involves breathing and movement as a method of circulating and using the energy in the body. It is sometimes connected with a Chinese martial art, but it is more in tune with the energy in the body and how it can maintain your health than a martial art is.
The Chinese people who practice Qigong see the practice as a breathing and movement exercise the seeks to reduce the amount of stress in the body. There are other branches of this alternative medicine that see it as a spiritual practice that brings the energy of the universe into the body to keep healthy and fight off illness.
The history of the practice can be traced back thousands of years. There is a period of Chinese history that banned all religious practices including Qigong. It was during the time following this period the Qigong seems to have risen among the people as a spiritual activity that seeks to connect the practitioner with the energy in the universe. There has been some controversy on the practice in China to this day and China has adopted a policy of no promoting, no debating and no criticizing of the practice to keep the controversy still.
People who practice this religion/alternative medicine believe that the power of the universe gives them the ability to levitate and other supernatural powers. There has been a great deal written about the practice in recent times and the Internet has provided those who are interested with a great deal of information.
