The Secret in Life is You Must Keep Moving
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

"You must keep moving" is a statement you hear when a person lives a very long life and asked "what is your secret for living to be 100 years old". All of my grandparents when they were in their 80's would say "I don't want to sit down (in a wheelchair) because once I sit down I may never get back up". Their instinct was to just keep moving slowly.

Our generation is totally different because we are tied down to our Blackberry, home computer, microwave, remote controls, cell phones and even our electric toothbrushes. Life is easier and we do not have to produce much effort to get everything we want in our lives.

Life is physically easier for us to the point we have to pay to go to a gym to exercise. How about some of bragging that we hired our own personal exercise trainer? My grandparents were farmers. When a new day would break through with sunshine, rain or snow, they were up and moving to do their daily chores. Neither one of my grandparents were sick until it was time for them to die a natural death.

They would walk to feed the animals, gather the eggs, milk and cows, move the hay, pick vegetables from their garden and would come home at the end of the day. Compared to our lifestyle of getting up, walking to our car, sitting most of the day behind a desk at work or behind a computer conducting our home based business makes a huge difference in being healthy.

There are several elements of living a healthy lifestyle our family learned from our grandparents; such as:

  1. Just keep moving and walk as much as you can daily.
  2. Eat healthy garden, fresh foods. Most of us are forbidden from growing our own gardens on our real estate property. However, seek out "home grown garden" foods - they are out there waiting to be discovered.
  3. Do not become a slave to technology if it makes your body inactive.
  4. And the final step to all of this is what my grandparents demonstrated in their lives.

  • Love/Communicate with your family daily or weekly
  • Help your neighbors when they need help
  • If you don't "need" something, don't buy it just because you "want" it. Upon my grandfather's death we discovered he had 10 bank accounts with $100,000 in each bank...they knew saving could be better than spending. When my grandfather got his social security check each month he would send it back and we never knew why he would do such a thing - that's why - he didn't need it.
  • If someone is sick, go visit them
  • When you get angry with your spouse, take a walk and you will feel better. If you argue you can never take back harsh words spoken.

Walking serves many purposes in our lives. Perhaps the most important is that done daily it can make you healthier and happier. Do I want to go back to my grandparent's days and the answer is I don't think so. However, I would be a fool if I didn't learn from those days in history how important the exercise of walking to our bodies.
