Stress and Travel - How to Lower Your Stress With a Few Simple Changes In Attitude and Action

Traveling can be stressful.  But it doesn't have to be.  At least not nearly as much as it often turns out to be.  Read on for a few things you can do to reduce your travel stress.

Part of what causes stress during traveling is that there are so many things we don't have control over.  And then, there are some things we can control but some of us are challenged to control them properly.

Let's look at the things we can't control though, and what aspects we have control over anyway.  It's surprising how much control we actually have even when it seems like we have none.

We don't have control over the plane.  Nor can we usually control our seat neighbors unless we're traveling with them.  We don't know for sure when the plane will arrive, whether there will be turbulence, and what if any food there will be.

And then, there are other things we can't control.  We have to subject ourselves to the security measures -- for our own good, of course, and the good of all.  And we may or may not get our luggage when we arrive.  Heck, the plane may not even leave.  Ever been on a cancelled flight?

What to do?  Getting upset is not usually very helpful.  So just do what you can to reduce the hassle factor of all those things you can't control.

I was stranded in Chicago last summer, and got completely derailed because I couldn't buy the things I needed for a good night's sleep.  I learned my lesson.  From then on, I've always made sure to put those things into my carry-on luggage.  Sure, it may still be a bit of a pain, but if it's the airline's fault, they do usually pay for the hotel, so it's a matter of rolling with the punches.

What about not getting your luggage?  Same thing.  Don't put stuff in your luggage that you will need right upon arrival.  Years ago, I put my keys in my suitcase!  Fortunately, the suitcase arrived when I did.  But the anxiety I suffered on the plane -- what if it doesn't? -- taught me an important lesson.

And about those security measures?  Most frequent travelers have learned to wear shoes they can pull off and on quickly.  And they have their luggage prepared for screening, so it causes minimum delays and hassles.

And the food?  Bring a stash of your own.  Use it instead of or as a supplement to what's being served on the plane.

And lastly, just be grateful that planes even exist.  And work as well as they do.  And almost always arrive at their destination without a hitch.  If you do all of the above, and take control of the things that are yours to control, you'll have a much better and less stressful trip.
