Are you frustrated because you haven't accomplished the things you've wanted to do? You might feel bad about yourself and even get discouraged or depressed. Read on for five reasons why you will benefit from overcoming procrastination.
Sure, changing engrained habits can be challenging, but it's worth it. You will really benefit from taking steps to overcome procrastination because its influence on your life is so insidious. The harmful effects will permeate every aspect of your life. If it becomes chronic, you might even find yourself in real trouble.
So here are five reasons why procrastination hurts you and how overcoming it can make a real difference in your life. These range from basic quality of life issues to professional success:
1. Lower quality of life
When you've got a mountain of things to do around the home, procrastinating won't make any of them get done faster. You might balk at the thought of having to mow the lawn, repair the leaky faucet and plug the holes in the garage wall all in one weekend. You might think of reasonable excuses why the faucet should remain dripping and why the holes in the garage are no big deal. But if you put things off, they start to add up. Before long you'll have many more repairs to contend with, and in the meantime your home will be less enjoyable.
2. Trouble at work
Not doing your work on time means you'll be pushing back your deadlines. When you're involved in a project and you're link in a chain, not completing you assigned tasks within the given period will affect the entire project. You'll gain a reputation as someone who constantly drags her feet. Your boss may even decide that you're a liability and show you the door.
3. Precursor to Depression
By procrastinating, you'll not only fail to get all your things done but you'll also feel bad about it. If you don't attend to the matters that need your attention, this has a spiraling effect on your emotional health. You'll probably start beating yourself up with negative thoughts. In time, you may even fall into serious depression.
4. Missed Goals
You may have been planning to lose weight for a long time so you could fit into your sheath red dress for the Christmas party. You may have been watching every episode of 'The Biggest Loser' to get motivated. But if you don't make a start on your diet and exercise regime, you're not going to get anywhere near wearing that stunning red dress come Christmas time.
5. Planning to fail
That's what procrastinating really means. By procrastinating, you're planning to fail in every worthwhile endeavor you undertake. You won't have the discipline to start on your projects. And if you do, you won't have the wherewithal to complete them.
If you think that this sounds depressing, you'll be heartened to know that there are ways to help things along. In fact, being aware of the reasons why you should overcome procrastination will inspire you take positive action to conquer procrastination. Once you have succeeded in overcoming procrastination, you can reach your goals and enjoy a more purposeful life.
