The question as to whether or not ADHD is being misdiagnosed is one of great concern to many parents and doctors alike. There are no definitive tests to confirm the condition only a battery of evaluations and brain scans.
Another hurdle for your medical professional in making a correct diagnosis is that ADHD manifests itself differently in every person. For example, the inattentive form of ADHD is much different in appearance than the more easily recognizable hyperactive form. Another area of confusion is that all of us exhibit at least some of the symptoms of ADHD from time to time such as lack of attention, losing control over our actions, or impulsive behavior.
To add to the confusion the condition known as ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder mimics a large number (latterly hundreds) of other conditions. Just take a moment to think about how many conditions you know of that include at least one of the primary symptoms of ADHD; inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Not all of these other conditions are mental disorders; some are medical conditions and still others are sensory processing disorders.
Let's explore three of the more common conditions that are often confused with ADHD.
* Generalized anxiety disorder: This condition is quite common affecting an estimated 15% of the population. It is best described as general anxiety that effects everyday events such as ones job or finances that often disappears once the triggering event has disappeared.
* Obsessive compulsive disorder: Often confused with ADHD, OCD includes symptoms such as recurrent anxiety producing thoughts and persistent repetitive actions.
* Depression: Making a determination between depression and ADHD can be relatively easy in some cases and very difficult in others. The challenge not only exists partly because the conditions share many similar symptoms but the co-occurrence of ADHD and depression is very common.
In summary, with literally hundreds of conditions at least sharing some of the most important diagnostic symptoms of ADHD it probably comes as no surprise that ADHD is often misdiagnosed. The good news is that there is complex brain scan technology on the horizon which has a good chance of narrowing and simplifying the diagnostic process, thus reducing the number of misdiagnosed cases of ADHD.
Additionally, many of those who have failed to receive a confirmation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are turning to natural ADHD remedies such as homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies for this problematic condition are safe for all ages and have been found to be an effective way or remedying such common symptoms as inattention, erratic behavior, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. If you are searching for an affordable natural option, homeopathy for ADHD is an area worth considering.
