You may have heard the expression, "Don't let great be the enemy of good."
More or less what that means is if you have a good job, don't quit in the belief that you can achieve a great job, faster, by having 100% of your time to pursue it.
Or, if there is a solution to any problem that is good, don't pass it over because you're convinced a great solution is somewhere down the road.
There's nothing wrong with "good."
But let's move down the food chain of achievement a little, shall we? Is there something short of "good" that we're letting good get in the way of?
There is, especially in this recession of ours. It is called survival, or as sales trainer Zig Ziglar dubbed it, the "Get-By."
You might want to live in a palatial home in the hills with a swimming pool and three cars in the garage.
That would be great.
Or you might accept a spacious condominium with a lot of nice people living next to and above and below you, in a lovely, leafy neighborhood. All of you blissfully share a swimming pool and a nice recreation room.
That would be good.
But in tough times you don't happen to qualify for either of these digs. You are squirreled away in a cramped apartment with noisy plumbing and gang graffiti a few blocks away.
That's the get-by.
This is still better than what Will Smith's character endured in the film, "The Pursuit of Happyness." If you've seen it, you know what I'm saying.
The key is to keep-on-keeping-on, to hang in there, until you can work your way back up the ladder to good, and then if you like, to great.
What's worse than the get-by?
It's the BRINK, and that's one place you don't want to be hanging out!
