Drug addiction is one of the severe maladies which affect the modern society. Drug addicts; initially believe that they can stop using drugs on their own. But most of them fail to achieve recovery, since the drugs induce changes in brain function. This results in adverse behavioral problems, including the compulsion to use drugs despite adverse consequences. In spite of that, research has proved that there is hope for even the severely addicted individuals.

The best way to recovery is to get the help of professionals. Once the driving forces behind addiction are identified, it is easy for the addict to get rid of them. Psychiatrists and other experts along with spiritual counseling and medication complete the process of total recovery.

One gets baffled to know about the wide range of addictive drugs available in the market. Treatment for specific drugs varies and treatment depends on the characteristics of the patients. Behavioral therapies are offered to people for helping them to cope with drug cravings, to avoid drugs and prevent relapse, if it occurs. Issues such as age, culture, sexual orientation, gender, employment, physical and sexual abuse etc are taken into consideration while determining the treatment program.

When patients suffer from mental disorders such as depression, anxiety disorder etc., medications such as antidepressants and mood stabilizers may be critical for treatment success. In chronic cases prolonged treatment becomes necessary. In case of infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, Tuberculosis etc., proper assessment should be done well in advance so that patients can modify their behavior to avoid placing themselves and others at the risk of infection.

An effective treatment addresses not only the individual's drug use, but also related medical, psychological, social, vocational and legal problems. Also if the treatment has to be fruitful, the patient has to be motivated to undergo the treatment for the stipulated period.
