So, you have identified one or more of the primary symptoms of ADHD; inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity. Or, perhaps you have noticed a few of the secondary symptoms such as loss of motivation, boredom, frustration, or low self esteem. You have done enough research to suspicion the existence of ADHD but have also read that there is not definitive way to confirm its existence. So, let's take a journey through a few options worth considering.
The first step on the road to confirming attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity is to find a medical professional that has an understanding of the condition and the different ways ADHD can manifest itself. While your general practitioner may be a good place to start (because of familiarity with your history) it may not be the best place to end up. There are four basic types of specialist which (depending on your situation) could prove to be a good source for a diagnosis:
* ADHD specialist: This is a broad category encompassing anyone who has experience or expertise in working with people with ADHD. These experts may have extensive knowledge covering different types of treatments and self help strategies but will not be able to prescribe medications. Therefore their input may be invaluable but may not be your last stop.
* Psychiatrist: For some bringing up a psychiatrist reminds them of the shower scene in the movie "Psycho". The fact is a psychiatrist is a medical doctor whose focus is on behavioral problems and mental illness. Unlike an ADHD specialist a psychiatrist can prescribe mediations and often stays abreast of the latest research concerning mental health subjects including ADHD.
* Psychologist: Many people confuse psychiatrist and psychologist. While a psychologist has formal training in mental health they are not licensed to prescribe prescription medications. That said, a psychologist may be able to offer up some good ideas outside of the non prescription medication arena.
* Neurologist: A neurologist is a medical doctor whose area of expertise is in the brain. Neurologists have been trained to view brain activity primarily from a biological point of view and may not be the best source for life strategies or alternative treatments.
In summary, finding the best specialist for you is an individualistic pursuit which depends primarily on the road you feel most comfortable traveling. Instinctively each medical professional will recommend the approach he/she is most familiar and that conforms with his/her general treatment approach.
Additionally, there are a number of natural ADHD treatment options that can be implemented either as a supplemental or primary treatment method. The most popular of these natural remedies is homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies are considered to be very safe and have been proven to be effective in managing ADHD symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
