The movie. "A Little Princess" is a touching tale about an affluent, imaginative, English girl that was spirited out of India by her widowed father. He was about to serve in the trenches of World War I, so she was sent to boarding school.
Though he was wounded and suffered amnesia, the story demonstrates that she was perhaps an even more impressive warrior, possessing an unconquerable spirit, upon which she had to draw as she was tormented and marginalized by a jealous, authoritarian, and callous schoolmistress.
The film is, in turns, heartbreaking and inspiring. And I recommend it to all, young and old, as a lesson in what makes us human, what is worth fighting for, and what strength is all about.
It is also an important incentive to cultivate the power of intention, which is possibly the only medium that offers redemption from evil, without succumbing to the very tactics that evil employs.
There is one sequence that I don't want to spoil for you. Let me set the stage, though.
The girl is huddled in a freezing attic with a cohort when she uses the power of her imagination to manifest a solution to at least some of their immediate troubles.
When the screen is suddenly filled with images of majestic, sunny orange, and relative opulence is all about, please remember that I told you it would give you chills.
It may even bring you to tears.
And in that moment in which you are engulfed in joy and relief and hope, you might experience a hint at what the power of a strong heart and an invincible spirit can do.
May your training be as uplifting!
The film says "Every girl is a princess."
What it doesn't say, but clearly signals is that every girl is a potential warrior, as well.
